Arc Flash Study Input Validation
Validates the inputs an IEEE 1584-2018 arc-flash study needs — bolted fault current, voltage, working distance, equipment class, clearing time — and states plainly that a licensed engine or vendor study is required to produce incident energy, PPE category, or arc-flash boundary.
What it calculates
- Nothing beyond input validation — this tool deliberately does not compute incident energy
Typical inputs
- Bolted fault current
- System voltage
- Working distance
- Equipment class
- Clearing time (optional)
Known limits
- IEEE 1584-2018's incident-energy regression coefficients are proprietary and licensed, and vary by voltage class and electrode configuration. SYMATEQ's data-accuracy policy prohibits hardcoding them from memory, since presenting an unverified formula as fact is the one failure mode that could put someone in the wrong PPE. A licensed IEEE 1584-2018 engine or a vendor arc-flash study is required for the actual number.
Frequently asked
Why doesn't this tool calculate arc-flash incident energy directly?
The IEEE 1584-2018 incident-energy formulas use regression coefficients that are proprietary and licensed, and they vary by voltage class and electrode configuration. Hardcoding them from memory risks presenting an unverified number as fact on a safety-critical calculation — this tool validates your inputs and points you to a licensed engine or vendor study for the actual incident energy, PPE category and arc-flash boundary.
